Hello, what kind of vocal training have the male leads ( jad, joel, matt, jd, etc ) recieved? What were the learning backgrounds and how did they work up to where they are now?

Are these the right kind of questions for this blog? Can the hillsong vocalists actually respond with there experience and advice? I think this is a highly untapped topic that many would like to discuss with them. It is difficult to start working on vocals and even be able to replicate some of the songs that they do, and it is easy to become discouraged. Thats why we would like to know how their path of learning, growing, struggling, before starting to reap success in this area. Thanks !!!
Please help us

Joe,
when you say that the songs are difficult to replicate and you become discouraged;
are you talking about how high or how long some of the songs are? if so then its simply a matter of changing the key down a few steps.
also there are HUGE benefits to vocal warm ups, something as simple as singing LA-LA up a range of scales daily will make a huge impact on not only increasing your range but helping to train your ear to hit notes dead on every time

I was asking not really regarding range but technique. Singing on pitch is one thing but the dynamics, compression, and skill they show are advanced. So I am wondering who if any are self taught, studied with an instructor, if so do they employ traditional methods or maybe speech level singing?

Guys, sorry. I dont mean to offend anyone here. But if you look at the greatest worshippers… they all start with a priceless passion to give glory to God. When you put God right on top, everything you are referring to, like techniques and intruments and equipment eventually falls in place. I’m not saying these are not important. But you got to have the Jesus as the foundation!! I reckon thats why everyone at Hillsong also keep doing day and night, to get things right!

I agree with that comment. However, not even hillsong let someone with a great heart sing along with them on stage if they can’t communicate that properly. I was speaking with some of the road crew about this question and almost got an opportunity to ask Jad but couldn’t. The info I did get was that they absolutely steer everyone towards lessons, conduct strict auditions, etc, etc. So I am just looking for a specific answer in terms of what the development picture looked like for some of these vocalists.
