Judges 11:30 + 31 “And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering”.
I’ve been reading Judges lately brushing up on some old testament hero’s in the faith when I came across Jephthah. Jephthah made a commitment to God, if God gave the Ammonites into his hand that he in return would sacrifice the first thing that came to greet him on his arrival home. The bible doesn’t mention anything about pets that might come wandering out of the front door, he might have secretly been hoping it was his mother in-law but the truth is he was limited to what was going to walk out the front door and he knew that it would be a sacrifice that would cost him something of worth. Jephthah, knowing pure well that he only had one daughter and one wife gave himself a 50/50 chance of loosing something or should I say someone that he loved.
Jephthah made a commitment and more than that he kept his promise and gave up his one and only daughter because he was a man of his word, a man of faith and a man of sacrifice.
What is it that we will sacrifice this year? Are you comfortable making a meaningless promise to God a commitment that you know can’t be kept or will you choose to give up something that hurts, those friends, that relationship, that addiction and choose to run after God laying down all that has held you back in the past and making the choice to step into a covenant with God and sacrifice that which will cost you something this year.
Choose to live passionately on purpose
