Amanda

AMANDA FERGUSSON

WHO IS YOUR FAMILY & WHAT IS YOUR STORY OF ORIGIN?
I’ve been married for 40 years to Robert and we have three adult children, all married, and six grandchildren.
I was born in London, England and moved to Australia in 1990.

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE BIBLE VERSE?
Yes! 1 John 4:19 – ‘We love because he first loved us.’ This is one of many, but I think it sums up the fact that it is all because of grace. All I am and do is as a love response to Christ’s love.

IS THERE A COLOUR MESSAGE THAT HAS RESONATED MOST WITH YOU PERSONALLY?
As an older woman I love the message that we have a role in supporting and mentoring the younger women to be all they can be. I also love the fact that we are called to be involved in social justice and to look beyond ourselves to the wider world and its needs, both practically and in prayer.

WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART ACHE IN THIS WORLD?
That ‘truth has stumbled in the streets,’ as Isaiah puts it, and so people do not have absolute values to live by. That the media has such power to manipulate people’s thinking and actions. That there is so much suspicion and mistrust between groups of people and nations. That the world can be obsessed with celebrity and fame and miss what really matters.

WHAT “FIELD” DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN & WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I teach in the Bible college at Hillsong and help my husband in pastoring and checking songs etc.

I love having the opportunity to teach and mentor young people from around the world, and I love the creativity of having input into our song lyrics.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR “PATH” TO BEING FOUND IN YOUR FIELD?
I gained a BA (Hons) in Theology at Nottingham university in 1976 and then trained as a high school teacher. I volunteered in my church in Nottingham and was also involved in an evangelistic team with my husband. I then had a few years bringing up my children while he travelled, and I had a couple of years teaching in a Christian school. When we moved to Australia in 1990 I began teaching in the Bible college and have been doing so ever since!

WHAT “BUMPS” HAVE YOU/ DO YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME ON THE PATH?
Marking assessments and admin is always a challenge! Also staying fresh as a teacher after all these years.
In the past, moving to Australia was a big thing for me as I’d never wanted to come here. I had to take the step of faith to believe that God had no favourites and, that if he had called my husband to Australia, then he had called the whole family. I have never regretted coming.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS “ON MISSION” IN YOUR FIELD?
Yes! My mission is to draw my students closer to Jesus so that their time at college is not just about achieving a qualification and skills, but about developing a relationship that will last.

WHAT’S NEXT TO BE DONE IN THE FIELD?
I want to develop further as a teacher and as a coach. I want to encourage the young trainers coming through and help them to succeed.
This is my dream field although I would also like to do some more writing at some point.
