PIPPA GUMBEL

WHAT IS YOUR STORY OF ORIGIN?
I am English but my father was in the armed forces so I was actually born in Germany.

WHO’S IN YOUR FAMILY?
I am married to Nicky Gumbel and we have 3 children, 2 boys and a girl and 4 grandchildren and a fifth expected.

WHO DO YOU WISH YOU COULD MEET FROM HISTORY? WHY?
Mary, mother of Jesus: She was a woman of faith, strong but deeply humble. Able to overcome adversity and she coped with a lot of uncertainty. Her faith never wavered even in really difficult times.

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE BIBLE VERSE?
John 10:10 This is the verse that someone showed me when I became a Christian and it jumped off the page. I wanted this abundant life. That was what I was missing and I have known that fullness of life that only Christ can bring ever since.

WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART ACHE?
Seeing the devastation of Syria; the terrible suffering, particularly of women and children, and the destruction of some of the most ancient churches of the world.

TELL US ABOUT ONE SIGNIFICANT GOD-MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE.
Many people have inspired & encouraged me along the way but actually, Christine Caine was instrumental in encouraging me to take more of a role in Christian leadership.

It was almost a reprimand that I was given by Christine not to make excuses and to step up and take more risks was a turning point in my life. On the way back from a Hillsong Conference I felt so excited inside, like I had swallowed a fireball.

WHAT “FIELD” DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN & WHAT WAS THE PATH THAT LED YOU THERE?
I’m co-leader of Holy Trinity Brompton with my husband Nicky. Mother Teresa said, ‘Just show up and things will happen’- and it’s true! There hasn’t been anything drastic in my life in the way in which God has lead me but I have always just taken the next step and God has always done the rest.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS “ON MISSION” IN YOUR FIELD?
Being part of Alpha has meant that I have seen so many people encounter Jesus and I have witnessed their lives radically changed. Being part of the Alpha groups which encourage the exploration of faith and the meaning of life is the biggest privilege. I also love to encourage the staff at HTB in all the different areas, whether it is in family life, in evangelism, worship, helping the poor, prison work, drop-in centres, church planting and pastoring and equipping young leaders. The staff work incredibly hard and I try to help in whatever way I can.

WHAT’S NEXT TO BE DONE IN THE FIELD?
I want the name of Jesus to be honoured again in the UK. I love my job and I love seeing people’s lives changed but we need more of the power of the Spirit, to see more and more people’s lives changed. We cannot do anything without God directing our steps.
