James
an original group study series
James – Jesus’ brother, and pastor of the Early Church in Jerusalem – was known for his focus on ‘good works’. The book of James is one of seven New Testament letters designated as General Epistles – including 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2 and 3 John and Jude. They are called the General Epistles because, unlike Paul’s letters which are occasional and therefore connected to a specific context, group and situation, these letters are more general in both intention and application.
In other words, they deal with more general issues relevant to a cross-section of Christians in the first century who are seeking to follow Jesus faithfully in a world that is often hostile to them. James’ letter is therefore a handbook on practically applying the working-dynamic of the believer’s faith and ‘works’ during times of temptation, trial and suffering.
