Above All Else

Feb 4 2011

Since I was a little girl, one of my favourite verses of the Bible has been Proverbs 4:23, Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. But, it was not until a little more than two years ago that I fully understood the importance of a healthy heart.

When our little Angelina Africa Hope was born on September 29th 2008 we were of course SO happy! Well, we were a little bit surprised as well, because she was four weeks early and Andreas was on his way home from Konstanz in Germany (preaching with our friends Joanna and Freimuth Haverkamp) when Angelina decided that it was time. So…. The last thing Andreas heard from me when his plane to Stockholm lifted was me saying ”Honey, I think my water just broke”… and when he landed Angelina was here.

Three days later the room started to spin when the doctor told us that she had a big hole in her heart. A thousand thoughts and questions went through my head, but as soon as I was left alone to reflect about it and pray, God reminded me of Abram, who changed his name to Abraham as a sign of faith. He believed God for something that he didn’t yet see, in a situation that was quite hopeless. So the same day we found out about Angelina’s heart we decided to add another name to Angelina Africa, and that was Hope. Our hope was and is in Him.

There are lots of people today who have heart issues in other ways. Something that has happened in life might have made their hearts broken and hurt, hardened, cynic or filled with hopelessness and doubt.

God can heal any broken heart, I know that. No matter how broken it is. We just need to have a little faith and a little hope in Him. About two years ago, Angelina went through heart surgery and today she is a lively, happy, strong little girl. All that witnesses of a once broken heart is a small scar. We still go on check-ups and she may or may not have to do another surgery, but my hope is still in Him.

In all situations, I have decided to guard my heart by filling it with faith, hope and love. To Him I put my faith and my hope, for He has loved me with unending love. He fills my heart with love for Him, love towards other people and love towards myself. With time, His love can heal any heart. Love conquers all.

And now these three remain: faithhope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
