When It's A Long Time Coming

Feb 17 2011

Have you ever felt like something you were believing for, expecting God to do was a long time coming? I think most people at some stage in their walk with God have had the thought, 'God, this seems to be taking a long time!'
The big question is, 'what do you do when something you are believing for or expecting, is so long in coming?'

We get a clear picture from Aaron and the Israelites in Exodus 32 of what NOT to do…

Exodus 32:1 says, “When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, 'Come, make us gods who will go before us.'”

Obviously it wasn't enough for the Israelites to see and experience the parting of the Red Sea and the miraculous provision of food along the journey… When they were not experiencing the immediate provision of God and their leader, Moses was absent… They decided to dip out on God and settle for a counterfeit.

I wonder how long we are willing to wait on God… To trust him every step of our journey?

Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.”

I guess this is great advice from David that we can apply to our real life circumstances and everyday desires and encounters…
If you happen to find yourself as a single person believing to meet your future spouse… Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him! Don't go after a counterfeit and miss God's plan and purpose for your life.

Maybe you're believing for friends and family to encounter the Lord Jesus Christ and open their hearts to his love, forgiveness and amazing grace! Keep praying for them, don't give up, trust God and… be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. God desires that all people would come into a life giving relationship with Him.

Maybe there is a job or specific destination that you are believing God for… Well trust in His perfect plan and purpose for your life and… be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Just like the Israelites, it's amazing how we want the 'now solution', the 'quick fix' and are happy to settle for a counterfeit and even talk ourselves into believing the counterfeit is God's will.

I've been walking with the Lord now since I was 15 years of age. Along the way I have felt at times like God's will for my life was on hold. Now I look back and see that God's 'not now's' were building in me maturity and character that helped position me and ready me for what I'm doing now…

Helping to lead and pastor Hillsong Australia, alongside my husband Joel, under the empowering leadership of Pastors Brian and Bobbie Houston was never on my 'list of things to do'. God's plan (and I think my response during particularly difficult seasons along the way) has far exceeded what I could have dreamt up in my wildest hopes or dreams.

I am very aware of my humanity and that sense that things I'm believing and waiting for sometimes seem so long in coming! However, I want to remain so steadfast in my TRUST of God that I refuse every counterfeit along the way. I pray that both your testimony and my own testimony would be one quoted by the Psalmist David…

They were still before the Lord and waited patiently for him and God's plan far exceeded their wildest dreams!
