I had a bit of a 'light bulb' moment the other day when reading James 3:9. It's one of those scriptures I've read a lot, but it finally made sense to me and I was like… Wow!
You've probably heard the scripture before:
James 3:9 (NIV) – “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness”
We would all agree that we are all created in God’s image/likeness right? (Genesis 1:27). But we are all slightly different, both physically and personality wise. Which means we all reflect a slightly different part of who God is and together create a truer reflection of what God is like, as a whole. Each one of us reflects a different part of God’s image, because we are all different. We are all created uniquely from a slightly different portion off the blue print of who God is.
Now let’s look at James 3:9 again in light of that.
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness…
Can you see it? When we curse man we are actually cursing God, because we are created in the image of God. Yes humanity is fallen and a long ways from being perfect, but the essence of who we are was taken from who God is. Genesis 1:27 (NIV) – So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
This is what I think James was trying to communicate here… How can you praise God and then indirectly curse God… through man. The two just shouldn’t go together! This revelation was a bit of an eye opener for me and made me think, “Am I actually doing this?? Praising God one moment and then cursing Him the next?” Makes you think ay…
