So What IS Young And Free?

13 Jan 2013

This is a question I’ve been asked A LOT over recent times.

My answer, well… It’s not just a few musicians on a platform, or a trendy slogan that we hash tag. It’s definitely not trying to be the next big thing, or on the contrary, a cute little project on the side.

Y&F is simply and genuinely… US. The voice of THIS generation. The NOW generation. Bringing a new sound and giving expression to what God is doing in our youth now.

As a church, over many years God has called us, graced us and anointed us to bring praise and worship that would be a blessing to the body of Christ. In this 30 year story, we have seen generations of people serving, leading and pioneering movements that has ushered in the presence of our great God, and that has helped the human heart connect with Jesus Christ.

Over the last few years, I’ve felt led in my heart to help turn another page in this story. I’ve seen so clearly how He is moving in our youth and is indeed doing a new thing. I’ve watched young people find their purpose in Jesus, stepping into their calling. I’ve watched as He has orchestrated the right people together, and I’m so excited that this week at our annual Hillsong Youth Summer Camp, we un-layer yet another generation, and record a praise and worship album, which is unlike anything we have ever done before.

As a youth pastor, I’ve got to know far too many incredible young people who are victims of their past, circumstance and choices. They’re bound by fear, intimidation, insecurity and depression.

It’s been said that “youth is wasted on the young” and I know this to be true.

So I believe with all my heart that ‘Young and Free’ is not just our name but also our message and our mission. I believe that God is calling this generation to stand strong in their youth and their freedom… AND I believe that these songs will see the captives set free. I believe that through this project young people will find life and deep, unending joy – in Jesus.

I am so proud and grateful to everyone contributing to this project, for those who have gone before us and have led the way, our Senior Pastors who believe in us more than anyone, and those near and afar that pray for us.

LET’S DO THIS!

Much love,

Laura Toggs
