I’LL FOLLOW YOU LORD FOR ALL MY DAYS,
I’LL FIX MY EYES FOLLOW IN YOUR WAYS
“Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?”
MARK 8:34-37 (MSG)
We live in a world that loves the idea of “follow me”.
Follow me on Instagram.
Follow someone’s fashion trend.
Follow your favourite band as they tour through Timbuktu.
Or, a personal fave – “Oh my goodness [insert famous/hot person’s name here] follows me!!”
We follow people at the touch of a button, subscribe to hear their every thought, see their every move, feel their emotions – and yet, we can UNfollow them in less time if we don’t think them worthy of our attention and love.
What does it mean then to be a follower of Jesus?
Throughout the gospels we see Jesus inviting people to follow him. Jesus called Peter and Andrew and they immediately left their nets to follow him. He called James and John and they also immediately left their boat and their father. These key disciples left everything they knew; their livelihoods, family, wealth and possessions to follow Jesus.
Relax, Jesus is not asking you to sell your iPod or your pet dog. Instead, like He said in Mark 8:34, we need to trust Him enough to let Him lead our lives – that means our agenda is no longer our own. When we wake up every morning we don’t wake up thinking of what WE want to do but we wake up saying “Jesus, what do YOU have for me today?”
Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where God asks us to do something that will greatly cost us – maybe to help someone less fortunate, to not hang out at a certain party or place because of the bad influences there even though all your friends are going, maybe it’s to stand up for Him in your school even though you may get teased for it.
In every circumstance, we must trust Him all the more. If following Jesus means that there are certain paths we cannot walk because of where we will end up, know that it is because He is leading us somewhere far greater than what we can see right now.
