Somewhat later than usual, a few of us collected together in February to imagine what creative moments we could add to Colour Your World women’s conference. Armed with a fairly substantial theme ‘The Greatest Love story ever told’ we started throwing metaphorical paint on the ubiquitous canvas.

It became fairly clear to us that it would be most effective to adhere closely to the title and stage a classic love story that could serve as a parabolic reminder of God’s love for us.

This thread of a classic love story had us referencing love stories new and old, but by the end of it we knew we wanted to work within a mashed genre of film noir and the silent film era.

A talented writer from London, Chris Gray, penned the screenplay and we quickly developed that into storyboards.

Since the story was neatly dictated by two environments, the country and the city, we decided to divide the look into a naturalistic, photographic colour look for the country and a highly stylized, composited, monochrome look for the city.

Our super-producer, Nadya started everything rolling and within a few days we were holding a casting while searching for locations and finalising wardrobe thanks to the uber efficient Claire Leeds… it really became quite mad!

All the city scenes were filmed on a green screen stage over two days and the environments were created with a range of 2D and 3D projection techniques within After Effects and Cinema 4D.

Given the context of where the film would be shown [live at the conference], we knew it would be important to blur the line between screen and stage and have some of the scenes play out as more of a musical theatre interpretation of the scene, which gave an element of performance that engaged the audience.
