History’s pages have been punctuated by manifestos – the declaration of those who hoped to leave their mark on this world. Some have been good and others have not. Many times these calls for revolution have been linked to violence… but not always. Over 2000 years ago, in a context of roman imperialism, a young Jewish rabbi called Jesus brought a manifesto of his own.
His words declared the establishment of a new kingdom that turned the kingdom of this earth on its head – a kingdom where love, servanthood, forgiveness and humility reigned. Hence the Sermon on the Mount was for his followers then, the early church that was to follow, and for Christians living today, a ‘Dangerous Declaration’ of the very best kind.
