At the 2011 Hillsong Conference in Sydney, I was sitting by my wife Amy listening to Pastor Bobbie Houston bring a powerful message to thousands of eager listeners. By the time she was finished, not only was I deeply moved by her brilliant talk, but I was overwhelmed with how she ministered to the masses while it felt like she was sitting down one-on-one caring for each person in the room. After she finished, Joel A’Bell affectionately referred to her as “the mom (or mum) of the house.”
I’ve always been supportive of women in ministry at all levels, but God showed me we were totally underutilizing one of the most important voices to our church: Amy, the mum of our house. For years, my amazing bride had been content to faithfully serve in a more invisible and supportive role. Thankfully, God used our time at Hillsong Conference to show me that Amy’s voice was vital to help move our church forward. So I invited Amy to take a more visible role to empower women and inspire our whole church, and God has used her to do more than any of us could have ever predicted. I thank God for every moment we’ve benefited from His presence at Hillsong Conferences!
