A New Space in Domestic Family Violence

May 16 2016

Like many nations around the world, Australia is shining a light on the injustice of Domestic Family Violence.

There are many women (some men) and children that suffer at the hands of a controlling partner. This is much broader than physical abuse. With the main characteristic being controlling, people are living if fear and are usually cut off from any support or the resource to get help. Many who escape these abusive relationships have nowhere to go and so return to an even more horrific situation.

Like many organisations, Hillsong Church has programs available but what is urgently needed is temporary housing to help survivor’s transition back into community life.

I was so happy to receive this report from Jason Allen, Head of Hillsong CityCare.

“This week our church has put a stake in the ground making a stand against this injustice of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV). The houses are now fully refurbished, with the first family having moved into one of the houses this week. A number of families are currently in the application process.”

Our team has been working with local DV refuges. Those that have seen the properties are amazed at the high standard of housing and care that we are able to provide.

We are one of only a few services offering transitional or post-crisis support and we are already seeing the demand. This week alone, we have received a significant increase in calls from all over Queensland, needing transitional support for families leaving abusive relationships and wanting support as they become re-established after experiencing this trauma.”

If you or someone you know is in danger please contact police immediately on 000.

Anybody needing help in a domestic family violence situation please contact a CityCare Agency.
