One of the most effective ways to make sure that your church’s weekend services and volunteer teams are strong is by appointing a service pastor over the service. The role of a service pastor, essentially, is to look after the different teams in a particular service, and help the people that attend that service get connected into the life of your church.

Here four traits of great service pastors:
1. They love their service
A great service pastor genuinely loves their service and the people that attend it. They won’t just do what’s required, but they’ll go above and beyond what is necessary to make sure that people are loved and connected. Whether it’s praying specifically for their service, making phone calls midweek or inviting team leaders over for dinner, service pastors love their service and do whatever it takes to move their service forward.
2. They can build teams and grow leaders
A great service pastor has the leadership skills to be able to build strong volunteer teams and high-capacity leaders. They’ll take the time out to invest into specific people to help them to grow into their capacity and to reach their leadership potential. Great service pastors are committed to developing people and positioning them in the right areas for them to flourish.
3. They outwork the vision of the church
Great service pastors not only understand the vision of the church, but are also committed to making it a reality in their service. They will think of and try out different strategies that will help their teams to outwork the vision of the church more effectively.
4. They help people take next steps
A great service pastor helps people take next steps – whether that’s coming to church more regularly, attending a New Christians course, coming to a connect group, or joining a volunteer team. Great service pastors know that being planted in church will allow a person to grow, flourish and step into all that God has for them.
We have found that service pastors play a key role in the life of church and can be so effective for building strong weekend services and volunteer teams.
