When Our Heart Forgets
The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. John 14:26 (MSG)
Sometimes, when I am feeling stressed, I can be quite forgetful. I’m sure you can relate – you spend hours studying for a test, and then in the middle of it, your mind completely blanks and you cannot remember anything! Under pressure, things that we should know or be able to do naturally can suddenly become foreign and difficult to recall.
Jesus knew that His disciples would feel anxious and afraid when the time came for Him to ascend to heaven. So Jesus promised them that God the Father would send them the Holy Spirit, who would be their advocate, counsellor, comforter, and friend. And one of the powerful roles of the Holy Spirit would be to remind them of everything that Jesus had told them.
When life gets challenging and overwhelming, and circumstances start to worry and frighten us, we can easily forget what the Word of God says about our situations and who we are in Christ.
Fasting heightens and intensifies our prayer life (Mark 9:29) and enables us to clearly hear the still small voice (1 Kings 19:12) of the Holy Spirit, who wants to remind us of the Word of God – when our heart forgets.
