Day 3 | February Fast 2017

Feb 3 2017

Why Fast?

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus explains why we are to fast:

Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” Matthew 9:15

The reason the disciple’s did not fast is because they had the very thing their soul longed for: Jesus.

If Jesus has won our hearts, we have also tasted His presence. We know there is nothing like it. We love Him and long for more of Him.Yet, if you are anything like me, you know that so many things can take our attention away. Even God’s good gifts, can become distractions and consume our time. He gives them for us to enjoy, but if we try to find our satisfaction in them, we go without the greatest gift – the giver Himself.

Fasting is the discipline of doing without one of God’s good gifts for a while, in order to draw closer to God. When we fast we are essentially telling God: “I hunger for you! Only you can satisfy my soul!” As we fast we say no to something good, so that we can say yes to something much greater.

Fasting is not for super-Christians or for those who have it all together. It is for those who are willing to admit their weakness. If you are dissatisfied with the status quo and hunger for more of Him, then this is for you.

I hope you are encouraged and I pray that you will try it for yourself. As you do, here is one simple advice: go small. Fasting is hard. One example could be to go without one meal every day for the next 21 days where we are fasting together as a church.

Also, don’t let the extra time you gain, skipping a meal, go to waste. Know why you are fasting and plan what you will do instead – whether that is praying, reading the Bible, or something else that is connected to your purpose. Otherwise, you’re not fasting; you’re just hungry.
