Count your many blessings. Name them one by one!

Count your many blessings. Name them one by one!

The other day I was sitting on the couch watching my baby boy playing with his abacus, those counting frame things. He is only eleven months and has no idea what it is yet, but as he rolled the colourful beads from the one side to the other, with much concentration, slowly, one at a time, God reminded me of the words of an old hymn.

Count your many blessings, name them one by one. And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

As if heaven planned that moment, this happened at just the right moment for my heart. I was feeling the weight of life in that moment.

Have you ever felt like David took the words right out of your mouth when he wrote in Ps 42:5 (Msg)

“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?”

Maybe you can relate to myself and King David of old today, because man, oh man sometimes life just has the ability rock you to your core. It can be due to a big external situations like sickness, losing a loved one, financial difficulty, or relational issues. Other times it’s because of an internal ‘unsettledness’, if that is even a word. But you know what I mean, those moments when your eyes wanders towards ‘what others have’, ‘where they are in life’, and all of the sudden you can be so hard on yourself, that you doubt if you’ll ever be good enough.

Sometimes you can feel unsettled because in reality your current season requires a complete selflessness, to lay aside your own personal needs and desires to fully focus on the precious life of another, for instance motherhood, marriage…

Oh and then there are those times when your heart is discouraged, or you feel lonely, or perhaps you feel stuck in circumstances that you can’t imagine ever breaking free from.

There are so many, very real reasons why we can find ourselves ‘down in the dumps’ at times. Especially if we choose to focus on those circumstances, feelings, realities…BUT (don’t you love a BUT) David didn’t stop there in that scripture and neither should we!

Here is how Ps 42:5 continues…

“Fix my eyes on God—
    soon I’ll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
    He’s my God.”

As much as we have the choice to focus on our circumstances, which leaves us crying the blues, WE ALSO HAVE THE CHOICE TO FIX OUR EYES ON GOD, and soon you’ll be praising and smiling again, isn’t that a much better outcome?

A practical way, I have found, that we can choose to fix our eyes on God, is to follow the words of that beautiful old hymn.

Count your many blessings, name them one by one. And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

And to do it like Jesse on his abacus, focused, slowly, remembering everything He has done for me up to now, naming it and thanking God for each and every single blessing and breakthrough, the big and the small. And just like that, before you know it, your heart will be reminded that our God is an awesome God! That He is for You, that He is the God of breakthrough and the God of miracles. If He did it then, He will do it again. You will praise Him again, He will put a smile on your face!

I hope you are encouraged today to face life with an attitude of Gratitude!
