And the Angels Shouted...

“Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.

‘At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises:

Glory to God in the heavenly heights,

Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.’”

Luke 2:8-14 (The Message)

And the Angels shouted… On the very first Christmas, the angels shouted for joy because they knew the world had received the greatest gift it would ever receive. In the arms of an incredible, ordinary woman, lay the most extraordinary child the world would ever know. Each year at Christmas – and every day in between – the angels shout new praises to that same extraordinary child. They proclaim passionately that “great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide…”

Each Christmas at Hillsong Church, we dress up the foyers. We put up trees and garlands, lights and tinsel. It’s one of the most extravagant seasons of the year. Each year we spend months planning for Christmas. Dancers and performers, production crews, and creative producers spend dozens of hours rehearsing. Our Christmas Spectacular is one of our most anticipated weekends of the year. Volunteers work countless hours preparing for this season. It’s not just a fun, festive time for us, however. It’s so much more than that. Proclaiming the story and praises of Jesus is one of the greatest honors we have as a church. We spend hours preparing for this wondrous occasion because it’s the greatest story we could ever tell.

Mary said it best when she proclaimed:

“I’m bursting with God-news;

I’m dancing the song of my Savior God.

God took one good look at me, and look what happened –

I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!

What God has done for me will never be forgotten,

the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others.

His mercy flows in wave after wave

On those who are in awe before him.

He bared his arm and showed his strength,

scattered the bluffing braggarts,

He knocked tyrants off their high horses,

pulled victims out of the mud.

The starving poor sat down to a banquet;

the callous rich were left out in the cold.

He embraced his chosen child, Israel;

He remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high.

It’s exactly what he promised,

Beginning with Abraham and right up to now.”

Luke 1:46-55 (The Message)
