Lena* grew up in a rural community in a country within the Mekong region. One day a couple came to her house and presented to Lena and her family a prosperous job opportunity for her in Thailand. She was afraid to leave her family but the opportunity seemed too good to be true.  After being transported to Thailand, Lena found out what the job really was – hard labour in a factory, working long hours without pay. In addition to the forced labour, she was forced to consume alcohol, was sexually assaulted and severely abused, and at times locked up by her trafficker.

Lena was rescued and after bravely testifying her trafficker was arrested by authorities. A21 was able to arrange for Leah to return to her home country where she was reunited with her family after years of separation and not knowing if she would ever see them again. Lena will soon enrol in a cooking training school and start the journey of achieving her dream of opening her own bakery.
