Remember to Breathe

Did you know that October is Mental Health Awareness Month? This is an opportunity for us all to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing. This month we will be giving you tips to continue to look after your mind, body and soul.

A guide to Calm Breathing

 

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7

While breathing is essential to living, it is also an important component of
managing stress and maintaining health.

You can be calm, even if things around you are not!

A strategy that can be helpful is STOP BREATHE THINK

STOP
Pause in the moment/situation. Allow yourself to ‘pause’ your behaviour, feelings and thoughts in the situation that is going on around you.

BREATHE
Slowly breathe in for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds. Grounding yourself is also helpful – 3 things you can SEE, FEEL & HEAR. Even if you find yourself drifting back to the situation you have paused, bring your attention back to your breathing

THINK
Think about your next steps… to listen, to speak, to act or to pray, or a combination of these. Maybe it would be helpful to go for a walk, talk to God, really listen and understand what a person is saying, sit in the sunshine, express yourself in a helpful and assertive manner.
