Everyday Ordinary Sisterhood Fight Club

Oct 6 2020

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.” Romans 12:1 (MSG)

Sisterhood has never just been about the big moments, when we all gather at Colour Conference together or host a gala ball to raise funds for a charity. Sisterhood has always been made up of the everyday moments, the ways in which we offer our everyday ordinary life as an offering to God. So this month we are doing just that. Taking our everyday lives and offering them to God to make something beautiful out of them. (Pastor Bobbie encouraged us from Romans 12 at Sisterhood United Night recently that’s available to watch here).

We have picked five simple things that we can all do sometime during this month. As we all seek to do these simple everyday things, we are believing that in this season of aloneness and disconnection we can reconnect with our communities, our families and our God.

So take the #SisterhoodFightClubChallenge from Romans 12 and let’s be a blessing to our world this month!

1. Pray. “Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder” v13

As a Sisterhood we always start with prayer but let’s reset our alarm clocks and choose one thing to pray for at midday every day this month (#MiddayBabyMidday). Prayer isn’t a last resort, it should be the first thing we do. As Bobbie has said many times “let prayer do the heavy lifting”, so with the world in turmoil, let us be the people that choose to pray every day for our world. If you are not sure what or how to pray remember:

“In the same way, the Holy Spirit helps us when we are weak. We don’t know what we should pray for. But the Spirit himself prays for us. He prays through groans too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

2. Be Kind. “Be inventive in hospitality” v13

#KindnessRules has always been a mantra for Sisterhood but, instead of random acts of kindness, let’s be deliberate about it. Find someone doing it tougher than you and make their life a little better. Drop flowers on a neighbour’s doorstep, pick up the phone to an elderly relative if you are still in lock down, pay for a coffee for the person behind you in the queue. COVID safe kindness still rules! #KindessStillRules

3. Choose Empathy. “Discover beauty in everyone” v17

Empathy is always a choice. In a world that is deeply divided, let us #ChooseEmpathy for those that think differently to us, choose to discover the beauty in everyone. This could start with having a conversation with someone that you wouldn’t normally hang out with and listen to their story, or read a book about an issue you need to understand better. We can show the world a better way if we choose empathy. (HINT: A21 has a global gathering this month online if human trafficking was an issue you wanted to know more about.)

4. Be a Friend. “Be good friends who love deeply” v10

In this current season there are many people who are feeling isolated and alone, as a Sisterhood let’s choose at least one friend who we know is struggling and be an intentional friend this month. Drop a text, catch up (if rules allow), face-time them, pick up the phone. As Romans says “laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down.” Sisterhood is united in FRIENDSHIP, COMMUNITY and CAUSE.

5. Give. “Get the best of evil by doing good” v21

Sisterhood has always been practical, we give both our time and our finance to make a practical difference in this world. Whether that be donating non-perishable food to a local food bank or sponsoring a child through Compassion, we can all choose to give something this month. Let us choose to get the best of this season by doing good! (HINT: Compassion Sunday is coming up in Australia this month!)

Let’s truly embody Sisterhood in this season and make the world a better place together!
