Hillsong Atlanta Opening Day Recap

Jun 12 2021

“I have a Dream”, Dr. Martin Luther King would say. Those words rang true to me this past Sunday (June 6th) as we welcomed Atlantans into our new home for the first time. Hillsong Atlanta was birthed out of a place of vision. In fact, our Global Senior Pastors flew in town from Australia for the Opening, what an honor, and Pastor Brian so eloquently spoke about that very idea. Vision. He stated that vision, among other things, was critical to the longevity and strength of anything and the fulfillment of a person’s God-given destiny. He spoke about the humble beginnings of the Hillsong movement and how in the early days when people were few, vision was overflowing.

As I stood in the back row watching the multi-cultural mix of people in Atlanta worshipping the living God – singing “New Wine” by Hillsong Worship, then jumping to a Gospel song by Jonathan McReynolds “I’m Not Lucky I’m Loved, I thought of vision. A vision for multiculturalism was planted in my heart years ago as I watched the political and racial divide grow for years within the Southern part of the United States. It was astounding to see, one by one, every race (white, black, asian, hispanic and so many more) walk through our doors for the first time. I believe they were filled with an expectation to meet Jesus together, as one family under God.

My message to our new family was simple: You are invited to be a part of the solution rather than the problem. Referencing Moses’s journey and how God used him to free the people, we too are freedom carriers. And it is time for us to carry that freedom into the most divided sectors of society for the sake of Kingdom advancement. Time is up for racism and inequality owning the narrative. At Hillsong Atlanta we are serving notice to every demonic force that seeks to bring down God’s house. It’s time to go.

So, we say WELCOME HOME to our new brothers and sisters and we also say “The Best Is Yet To Come”. To the rest of our Global family I say thank you for welcoming me and my wife with open arms. We are truly honored to be a part of this revolutionary movement.

From the parking lot to the kids space, to the club auditorium, we felt God with us at every turn and at every moment this past Sunday. Hillsong Atlanta has begun and is ready to love this local and global community well. Would you pray for us whenever we come to mind? We are expectant but certainly not naive of the weight we now carry. Love all of you tremendously. Hope to see you in Atlanta soon!
