Never the Sensei Always the Student

Jul 7 2021

I have NEVER been good at school! I’m not sure if you can relate, but growing up retaining information for me was like watching dry sand slip through my fingers. This probably contributed to my lack of discipline and mischievous behaviour – my mind just didn’t want to play ball! Until I was about 20 years old in Bible college – one lecture changed my life. The lecture was simply called ‘Learning How You Learn’ and then and there my eyes were open!

I had learnt that only 30% of any group of students only really learnt well in the traditional classroom setting and the rest of us didn’t. And, after answering a few questions I discovered how I learned! My life changed! I am what you call a reflective or conversational learner – meaning that if I read or heard something I had very slim chances of retaining that information. BUT, if I had a conversation about something I had read or heard, I would basically remember it forever! (Mind blown!)

How does this relate to worship you ask?

Well it really doesn’t exclusively relate to worship (as in the musical aspect of our worship) but has helped me after 15 years of being on our team and 10 years of being on staff at Hillsong Church to stay teachable, relevant and up for change that comes through many seasons. I had a revelation a couple of years ago that I had way more to learn in each room than I did to contribute and the more I committed to learning, the more I have been able to contribute! So, quickly, I had three thoughts around ‘Never The Sensei / Always The Student’….

THERE IS WAY MORE CREATIVITY IN A ROOM OF PEOPLE THAN THERE IS IN YOUR HEAD.

Collaboration teaches you so much and helps to put new tools in your basket whether be leadership, song writing skills, projects etc.

WE HAVE WAY MORE TO LEARN THAN WE HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE

And even if that’s not always true, it definitely is always a great spirit to carry. People generally don’t like working with a know it all!

THE MORE YOU COMMIT TO LEARNING THE MORE YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE.

The day that I think I have mastered leading, writing and creating in general is the day you’ve capped your potential. There is always more out there to learn, to add to your tool box, to sharpen who you are and what it is that you are putting your hand to!

May every day we awake be approached with the spirit of a student, and may our prayer be “Show me your ways, Lord. Teach me you paths.” (Psalm 25:4) and then watch the potential of what you contribute be limitless!
