International Day of Peace 2021
The 21st of September is observed around the world as the International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations (UN) in 1981. On this, the 40th anniversary of this day, the UN is encouraging the global community to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.
The UN says, “The pandemic has been accompanied by a surge in stigma, discrimination, and hatred, which only cost more lives instead of saving them: the virus attacks all without caring about where we are from or what we believe in. Confronting this common enemy of humankind, we must be reminded that we are not each other’s enemy. To be able to recover from the devastation of the pandemic, we must make peace with one another.”
In other words, our world desperately needs people who are PEACEMAKERS.
If you were part of Colour Conference this year, you may recall that we brought attention to what it means to be peacemakers in our world. We called it the Art of Peacemaking.
We posed questions like: What is peacemaking? How is it different to peacekeeping or peace-loving? What does it mean to actively pursue peace in our world?
And we explored some of the key qualities or characteristics of a peacemaker – empathy, humility and wisdom (critical thinking).
If you didn’t have an opportunity to join us for Colour this year, the good news is that we also created a 5-day devotional called The Art of Peacemaking. It has been specifically designed for you to discover how you can personally begin to or continue to learn the art of peacemaking through the central passage of Romans 12:1-21.
It’s free to download here.
This week is a great opportunity for us as a Colour Sisterhood to do this together. You can choose to do it on your own or gather with a few friends online or in person (if your local restrictions allow).
You can also follow @coloursisterhood on Instagram where we’ll be posting the topic for each day over the next five days.
Let’s personally make every effort to be peacemakers in our world; to serve one another with grace, pursue reconciliation, speak truth in love and engage our world with empathy, humility and wisdom.
