What's in a name?

In 2021 the most popular names given to babies in many countries around the world were Luna and Arlo. Maybe your name was popular at the time you were born and now there’s not many baby Geoff’s or Patricia’s these days?

In the bible we read that an angel told Mary and Joseph that they should call the baby Jesus. Matthew 1:21 (NIV), “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

When Jesus was born, the name Jesus was actually quite a common Jewish name. It’s a Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua or Yeshua, which means Saviour. If there were lots of people with the same name, what was special about this ‘Jesus’ compared to all the others?

We also read that He would be called, “Immanuel” which means God with us. Matthew 1:23 (NIV), “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).”

What a beautiful name, wonderful name and powerful name the name of Jesus is, but it’s not the name itself that has power. It’s who it belongs to. Jesus was ‘God with us’ sent from God for the salvation of all mankind

Hebrews 1:3-4 (NIrV), “The Son is the shining brightness of God’s glory. He is the exact likeness of God’s being. He uses his powerful word to hold all things together. He provided the way for people to be made pure from sin. Then he sat down at the right hand of the King, the Majesty in heaven. So he became higher than the angels. The name he received is more excellent than theirs.“

Jesus name is above all other names. Christ died and rose again for our sin. And because of who Jesus is and what He has done for us, His name has powerful meaning in our life today. What a beautiful name the name of Jesus is!
