How to Grow a World Class, World Changing Worship & Creative Team

May 25 2017

If I was a gambling man, which I’m definitely not, I would bet that you could get down on the ground and do one push-up.

Most of us could do that… one push-up!

The first one is the hard one. Once you’re down there and you’ve done the one, the next one comes a lot easier. You may not be able to do 50 push-ups, but just about any of us can do one.

What has doing one push up got to do with growing a world changing worship team?

Let me explain by quoting Jesus.

In the Gospel of Matthew 18:12-14 Jesus tells a story about a lost sheep, he says,

What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” (NIV)

Okay, before you start telling me that this passage has nothing to do with push-ups, or exercise in general, let me acknowledge that this is a parable where Jesus reveals his rescue mission for sinners. The Pharisees had accused him of socialising with “sinners”,  but Jesus showed his radical plan to go after the 1%.

Jesus cares about the 1%.

So, if we can apply Jesus’ care of the 1% and our ability to do just one push-up, then we have an amazing revelation about how we can all grow world changing worship and creative teams.

We need to go after the 1%.

We need to care for the lost, like Jesus. We must search for the lost. If our mission, like Jesus’ mission, is to care for the 1%, then we’ll find that our teams will reflect Jesus’ care for what  matters—people connecting with Him. Our teams grow when our local congregations grow as sinners return to the fold.

We were all part of the 1% at some point. Let’s never forget that it’s individuals who make up the 100%. What we do as worship teams, in reality, has little to do with music, or set lists or rehearsals… It’s all about the 1% returning to Christ and helping them glorify Him in every area of life!

What if we, as the former 1%, lost sinners now found, all focused on giving just one 1% more to Christ… 1% more of our time, 1% more attention, 1% more excellence, 1% more for the needs of others, 1% more to improving our craft, 1% more to being the example of a godly Christ-like life? If you decided to be 1% more dedicated to improvement and change, in your life and team, with commitment, you would see the continuous result as huge change over time.

We need to stop the excuses!

The truth is, we can all do one push-up, and we can all dedicate some area of our lives that little more. We all want growth now, or change in general, but that’s impossible, and that’s what ironically holds us back from arriving where we dream of being. So, instead, my encouragement to you is to focus on the one. Choose one thing to change, one thing to improve, one thing to work on. Then, when you’ve nailed that one thing, choose another, then another.

If the one represents 1% and you make a small adjustment everyday, it won’t be long before the ones accumulate into a much bigger percentage.

1% everyday for 100 days is a 100% improvement… and that’s incredible.

You may not be able to improve anything by 100% today, but we can all improve 1% today and everyday. Let’s stop with the excuses about excellence, or improvement, or why we haven’t grown. Let’s stop thinking there’s some magic formula we can apply. Instead, go on and choose something to improve, to change, to grow in, and start there.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

You can do it!

Let’s dedicate ourselves to the 1% just as Jesus did. We can all do that.

Let’s apply Jesus’ care of the 1% to every area of our lives and every area of our teams! Let’s put our whole heart, whole lives, into serving the Lord, without excuse or distraction.

Imagine the possibilities.

I can’t wait to see all God does as we commit ourselves to making regular 1% changes.

Over to you!
