This Psalm is likely written after the people of Israel returned from exile to their land. They were filled with joy when they experienced God’s redeeming power. Our creativity and art can speak and encourage the ones who are weeping that there is joy on the other side. By the grace of God any situation can be turned around.

The Psalmist reminds us that the tears we sow are often what brings the harvest of joy. Sowing comes before reaping. Maybe being real and honest about both the tears and the joy in our creativity is a way to sow what we have and trust that God brings a good harvest.

As we reflect and respond to this psalm and the theme From Tears to Joy we hope that the people in your world would be encouraged. Let us remember all the good things God has done as we look forward to what He is about to do. Psalm 126

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

Restore our fortunes, Lord,
like streams in the Negev.
Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.
