November marked a historic month for Greenlight – the launch of our second medical van. For the first time, two medical vans went out to two different boroughs on Thursday night: Highbury & Islington and Tower Hamlets.

Greenlight was started six years ago by a small team with a passion to help the homeless community of London on a medical level. The passion of the few individuals and the sacrifice of the many volunteers over time have enabled us to expand our service to not only provide minimal-invasive medical care, but also to provide signposting service – helping the homeless to access other services. With over 500 volunteers, we are able to run the medical van every evening on the weekdays and during the day at the weekend.

Statistics show that 73% of the homeless community have a physical health problem and they are 40 times less likely to be registered with a GP. As a result, many of them suffer with physical and mental health conditions, which makes it difficult to move forward in life. Greenlight provides its service by partnering with different organisations, such as night shelters, hostels, soup kitchens, winter shelters and outreach teams.

Since the launch of the second medical van, we have been able to reach even more homeless people across London. We are currently running the two vans on Thursday and Wednesday night in areas where we have partnered with organisations to access the homeless.

Over the six years, we have seen numerous lives changed and transformed thanks to the work of the volunteers who facilitate the medical van. Not only has it helped people medically, but it has helped our service users move forward with their lives, whether that be by referrals to GPs to improve their health or referrals to a housing association for accommodation. One of our many goals for Greenlight is to see the second medical van active on all nights and weekends alongside the first medical van, so that we can continue to expand the services to reach the homeless communities of London.

There are many ways in which you can support Greenlight. You can get involved directly and volunteer with us by visiting or you can donate online to financially support our cause and vision.
