Marcy is a full time volunteer at Hillsong Africa Foundation (HAF). She hails from the United States and recently completed her studies in South Africa. She and her husband Steff have been involved in various community & social development projects in Cape Town, South Africa.
This project laid the foundation for Hillsong Mitchells Plain campus that opened recently. The people of Mitchells Plain have become used to big promises and no follow through. Being in the community for more than eight months now has demonstrated to the people that we are serious and here to stay.
Through the Mitchells Plain project, the Hillsong Africa Foundation is joining hands and working together in order to pioneer a fundamental concept… community!
1. A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.
2. Common ownership and participation
3. Similarity or agreement
The idea of community is simple and something that we all know and understand. However, in the hustle and bustle of the 21st century, it is easier than ever to forget the amazing power that lies within the relationships between neighbours, those of similar backgrounds, and those who share common interests.
The power within community is what the Mitchells Plain Project is founded on. Through this project, we are working together to identify and build up strong leaders while also providing a platform for children, youth, men and women to gather, share opinions, voice problems and most importantly work together to make their dreams come true. Through these discussions we have identified key areas of need where HAF can provide a helping hand by facilitating discussions to pave a way forward: substance abuse programmes, addressing issues of teenage pregnancy, education/literacy, childhood skills development, and sports development whereby life skills can be taught.
The possibilities for making a difference are endless, but how do we create sustainable and long-lasting change in the lives of those in need? I believe that motivating and leading communities to recognise the amazing power that lies within people who work together is the first step for making positive change.
