In May 2012 we were introduced to the Gregg family from Wishart, Queensland. They have three beautiful children, two of which suffer from a disease called ‘Batten disease’. Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that typically begins in childhood. Over time, children suffer mental impairment, seizures as well as loss of sight and motor skills.
After discovering that the Gregg family had some major issues with their home, and that their driveway was problematic when transferring their daughter from the car to the wheelchair, we decided that through Hillsong CityCare, we could be a help to this family.
The response was amazing! We had over 80 volunteers give of their time and skills. There were even people who donated resources such as concrete, turf, kitchen and other materials to help make life easier for the Gregg family. The driveway was completely redesigned and concreted, the front yard was landscaped, and a beautiful huge door was specially fitted, making it easier for wheelchair access.
Inside the house, a stunning new kitchen was modified and fitted. Volunteers helped clean, paint and make general repairs to the home. While the renovations were taking place, the family enjoyed a much-deserved rest on the Gold Coast, and to their surprise, this holiday was also donated.
I love that when the opportunity arises to help people like the Gregg family, there are so many people who are ready, willing and able to help in any way they can.
