We are excited to gather together as the women of Hillsong Church Australia for Sisterhood United in November. As the Sisterhood, we always want to make a difference in our world through prayer and tangible response. This year, as we gather, we are holding a “baby shower of sorts” to women coming in from the country to have their babies in Eastern Arnhem land.
In the Northern Territory, all women from remote communities have to travel a long way to have their babies at one of 4 hospitals. Each woman comes in up to 4 weeks in advance and stays in town at the hospital for up to 6 weeks before returning home. Gove District Hospital is one of these hospitals, a 30-bed acute care facility in the coastal town of Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem Land. The midwives at the hospital reached out to the Sisterhood to see if we could help with making this season a little easier for women attending this hospital to have their babies.
The Yolngu people are the traditional owners of this region and are one of the oldest living cultures on earth. Women coming to the hospital are from small communities on traditional homelands and English is typically the second or third spoken language. Having a baby is a stressful time in any woman’s life, and especially for women who are away from their families, partners and communities for that length of time, so we want to provide each woman with a gift to welcome her baby and hopefully help to make the experience a little less isolating.
We are hoping to create beautiful care packages for all of the women at Gove District Hospital coming in to have their babies and, as an Australian Sisterhood, to help make this time a little less isolating and uncomfortable by providing some of the culturally appropriate items they need for themselves and their babies.
HOW DO I HELP.
Purchase a Coles/Myer or Woolworths/BigW Gift Card of any amount and bring it with you to the Sisterhood United Night in your location. These will be used to create hampers that will be given with love from their Aussie Sisterhood.
Alternatively, you can give an amount of your choosing here, simply select “Local Impact – Arnhem Land Hospital” from the drop-down menu. All of these funds will be used to purchase other needed items for the hampers.
In Bali, we are asking women to donate NEW sanitary items and NEW bras and underpants for inmates at Kerobokan Prison. All items can be dropped off at the City Care stand in the foyer on the night.
