Day 17 | February Fast 2017

17 February 2017

Satisfy the Hunger of Your Heart

A couple of years ago I found myself in Papua New Guinea. I was with a small group of friends, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to tribes who did not know Him as their personal Saviour. Here, I found in myself a desperate hunger for a closer relationship with Jesus.

Although I had never tried it before, I felt led by the Holy Spirit to fast from food, every other day, for the six weeks I was there. I knew about fasting, but for whatever reason, I had never tried it before. And let me say up front, it proved to be life-altering experience for me.

When my friends gathered to eat, I would go off to a room by myself. As my stomach was growling to get my attention, I would flip open my Bible and let down the guards of my heart. It wouldn’t be long until the holy presence of God would overwhelm me in a way that I had never experienced before.

I would prayerfully ask God to reveal Himself to me through His Word. Sometimes I was brought to tears, as I would see my sin with renewed clarity, other times to tears of joy because of a greater revelation of His love and grace. Every word of the Bible stood crisp and clear, and it pierced my heart.

The psalmist was well aware that our hearts are on a constant quest for satisfaction, but he knew it could only be found in one place: Jesus. “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” Psalm 90:14

We can fast for many great and godly causes, but allow me to encourage you to spend this season to intensify your taste for Jesus. Only He can fully satisfy the hunger of our hearts and He promises to do so “all our days” (Psalm 90).

No one but Jesus can live up to that promise.

Reflection:
• Do I spend time reading my Bible with an open and expectant heart?

Prayer Points:
• Ask God to help you let down the guards of your heart.
• For church to get our own building, and the leaders to make wise decisions about it.
