Day 6 | February Fast 2017

6 February 2017

Why Pray?

Fasting is the practice of leaning into God and putting Him above all other things in our lives. It could be our career, our stomach, or our bank account. It’s not twisting God’s arm to get our own way, but rather, aligning ourselves with His will for our lives. Prayer and fasting go together, as we, through prayer, get to tune in to His still voice. Through fasting, we are more susceptible to hearing from God and prayer is our way of communicating with Him to remember why we are doing it, and who we are doing it for.

Prayer is a central part of fasting because it helps set our mind on Him and tune out the world around us. It reminds us from where we get our strength- a valuable part of fasting. It will be difficult to honour our commitment to God without tapping into the true source of our strength. Strengthening or renewing our dependency on Jesus by praying will give us the strength we need to finish the fast.

“I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. He won’t let you stumble, your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.” (Psalm 121:1-3 MSG)

Prayer strengthens our faith muscles as we get better at looking to Jesus when going through moments of temptation. Our strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. And as we set aside extra time for prayer this week, let’s focus on leaning into God and we will experience our strength being renewed.
