40 Days of Deeper Devotion

WEDNESDAY MARCH 2 — THURSDAY APRIL 14

It’s really easy to celebrate Easter as a holiday, in passing. The chocolate eggs, the bunnies, the family gatherings, and church services all play a special part in this event on the Christian calendar.

But what if, this year, we didn’t just treat it like another event? What if, as a community, we prepared our hearts with 40 days of Deeper Devotion in the lead up?

A season of Lent has long been observed by followers of Christ and this year, we are going to join together in unity with believers around the world and focus on Jesus, His death and resurrection. Our hope is that we would see our church walk into Easter weekend with a renewed sense of spiritual health, a hunger for the Word of God, closer relationships with one another, and a deeper awe for what was accomplished on that hill in Calvary, thousands of years ago.

40 Days of Deeper Devotion is essentially a time to fast and pray. We invite you to remove something from your life that will help you to focus on Jesus — by removing a distraction we can fix our eyes more fully on Him. Or perhaps instead you'd like to add something — something that will draw you closer to the heart of God. There need be no sense of religious obligation, simply choose something that works for you, anything that will draw you in to deeper place with Him.

We’ve created a list of ideas about how YOU can get involved

Add something for 40 days:

Is there something you could add to your day that deepens your relationship with God and others?

  • Start a Bible reading plan. There are lots of great ones on YouVersion
  • Do a daily prayer walk
  • Shout a stranger a coffee each day
  • Read a Easter/Lent devotional
  • Strike up daily conversations with your neighbours/co-workers
  • Start using a prayer/meditation app
  • Join or start a connect group
  • Volunteer to serve with CityCare
  • Wake up earlier each day to spend time with Jesus
  • FaceTime or call someone who is isolated or struggling
  • Write letters to a persecuted believer via Open Doors
  • Forgive someone who has hurt you
  • Start a gratitude journal
  • Host a weekly dinner with unsaved friends/family
  • Sit in silence for 15 mins each day
  • Sponsor a child through Compassion
  • Attend an extra church service
  • Text someone each day something encouraging and thoughtful
  • Visit an elderly relative or friend
  • Listen to a worship playlist each day

Remove something for 40 days:

Is there a distraction in your day that you could remove?

  • Social media
  • TV/Netflix
  • Negative thought patterns
  • Video games

Is there something in your speech that you could change?

  • Gossip
  • Negativity

Is there a luxury you could go without?

  • Dessert
  • Coffee
  • Meat
  • Chocolate
  • Non-essential spending/shopping
  • Make-up
  • Take-away/delivered meals
  • Soft drinks
  • Snacking

Is there a habit you could break?

  • Negative thought patterns
  • Limit screen time (eg. no screens between 7pm - 7am)
  • Indifference
  • Over-scheduling
  •

——  HEBREWS 12:2-3 NIV

——  “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,
——  the author and perfecter of our
——  faith, who for the joy set before
——  him endured the cross, scorning
——  its shame, and sat down at the
——  right hand of the throne of God.
——  Consider him who endured such
——  opposition from sinful men,
——  so that you will not grow weary
——  and lose heart.”

Table Talks

Table Talks

"There is probably no better time to celebrate and feast, because resurrection is a reminder that we are headed to a banquet.” – Rich Villodas

A table is a place where we are nourished – a place where we allow someone else to meet our needs. Jesus himself served at the first communion table, beckoning others to sit, and eat and rest. These ‘Cross Equals Love Table Talks’ are exactly that – intentionally creating places of safety, rest and celebration, believing that when we gather to talk about our faith in an authentic and intimate way, there would be healing and wholeness as a result.

Join us as our diverse church family gathers to talk about life and faith, the current season, the reality of the past and hope for our future in the lead up to Easter.

Pancake Tuesday

TUESDAY MARCH 1

For centuries Christians have begun their 40 day fast towards Easter, with a simple tradition of eating pancakes the night before their fast begins. THIS YEAR, we are doing it TOGETHER. March 1 is officially PANCAKE TUESDAY at Hillsong Church!

We’re inviting you to set a table: for your connect group, your neighbours, friends, and family and put forward an INVITATION to gather. It doesn’t need to be fancy, well-crafted, or clever – anyone can make pancakes! This is simply a moment to come together; to be nourished and encouraged as we set out on a 40-day journey towards Deeper Devotion.

If you'd like to join a Connect Group or start hosting a connect group, talk to your service pastor.

Pancake Recipes

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES

Serves 4

Ingredients:

2 cups plain flour
3 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsps baking powder
1 1/2 tsps baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
2 eggs
3 tbsps melted butter
2 tbsp oil for frying

Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a bowl. Pour the buttermilk, eggs and melted butter into the mixture. Whisk everything together until all ingredients are incorporated. Do not over beat (small lumps are fine).

Heat a nonstick frypan, over low heat for about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet. Turn heat up to medium–low and using a measuring cup, ladle 1/3 cup batter into the frypan.

Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, about 2 to 4 minutes. Cook until the other sides are lightly browned.

Remove pancakes to a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet, and keep in heated oven until all the batter is cooked and you are ready to serve.

ALMOND MEAL PANCAKES

(Low Carb/GF)

Serves 6

Ingredients:

2 cup almond meal
2/3 cup GF self-raising flour
2 tsp baking powder
6 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup sparkling water
2 tbsp oil for frying

Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes.

Heat a nonstick frypan, over low heat for about 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet. Turn heat up to medium–low and using a measuring cup, ladle 1/3 cup batter into the frypan.

Flip pancakes after the bottom has browned, about 2 to 4 minutes (they won’t “bubble” on top the same way as regular pancakes). Cook until the other sides are lightly browned.

Remove pancakes to a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet, and keep in heated oven until all the batter is cooked and you are ready to serve.
