THIS IS THE BEST SUMMER OF OUR LIVES

Juls Winter | Sunday 05.07.2020

KEY VERSE
Matthew 5:13-16 (MSG)
“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.

“Here’s another way to put it: you’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If i make you light-bearers, you don’t think i’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand — shine! Keep an open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in Heaven.”

THE BEST SUMMER OF OUR LIVES
Two things framing this season and this year for our community:
1. Summer Momentum
2. The Year of Overcoming

WE SEE AN OVERCOMING SPIRIT THROUGHOUT GOD’S STORY
GOD CREATED SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING
Genesis 1: 1-5 (NIV)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

JESUS OVERCOMES DEATH
Matthew 28: 5-7 (NIV)
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

Mark 16: 5-7 (NIV)
As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

Luke 24: 6 – 8 (NIV)
“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

BAPTISM
Romans 6:4 (NLT)
For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

GOD TURNS MOURNING INTO DANCING
Psalm 30:11 – 12 (NLT)
You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!

GOD RESTORES THE BROKEN
Isaiah 40:31 (NLT)
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

GOD GIVES US SPIRITUAL ARMOUR TO OVERCOME ATTACK
Ephesians 6: 10 – 17 (NIV)
Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

SUMMER MOMENTUM
We have been called out of darkness so that in Him we can overcome and become His representation on the Earth!!!

1 Peter 2: 9 (TPT)
But you are God’s chosen treasure—priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvellous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world.

Let’s choose to be salt and light! This is how this can be the best summer of our lives.

HOW DO WE KEEP OUR SALTINESS AND SHINE BRIGHTLY?

1. DO WHAT YOU KNOW TO DO!

  • Live out the values that we have.
  • Living with a spirit of generosity and hospitality.
  • Stay with the basics of faith:
the salt and light that our world needs cannot be bought or produced in our own strength, it’s the fruit that comes from our walk with God. Fruit that shows up through communion, prayer, the Word, praise and worship, through exercising faith, through generosity in giving.

2. KEEP SALVATION AT THE FOREFRONT OF YOUR PERSPECTIVE
1 Timothy 2:3-5(NIV)
This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

We need to:

  • Know why we are supposed to shine and be the salt of the earth:
God wants everyone to be saved. We have the amazing privilege of representing God on earth and dealing with spiritual poverty.
  • Ask the question: what is within my perspective, within my focus?
Salvation should always be at the forefront of your focus, because it will determine the decisions you make and the path you take.

3. STAY IN THE BODY
When we accept and do our part in the Body of Christ and unite around our common purpose, our impact is far greater than many individuals working on their own.

When we talk about “the best summer of our lives” it is not just positive or hyped up talk but challenging ourselves to have more than just a mediocre/normal summer.

Let’s be believers that are believing – because it’s what our world needs!

We are believing that this summer we will see:

  • A God-glorifying overflow of salvations
  • A new kind of community that is generous and hospitable
  • Growth in faith and in capacity, with purpose being put back into people’s lives
  • Passivity shaken off and replaced with expectation
