As you may be aware, a new bill has been introduced into State Parliament: ‘The Reproductive Healthcare Reform Bill’ which allows significant change to laws concerning abortion in New South Wales. Over the last few weeks I have been overseas and was not originally aware that a new bill had been presented and am saddened to see it is now being debated.
Whatever your view on this, it cannot be simply reduced to a ‘political’ issue. Every life – inclusive of young and old – is irrevocably precious to God. While I understand there are many sensitivities surrounding this issue, it is important that all voices be expressed in the decision-making process of this legislation.
With this in mind, let me first encourage you to pray for the leaders of our state to delegate and make decisions with godly wisdom and courage – as Bobbie has articulated over the years, “let prayer do the heavy lifting”. In addition, if you feel inclined to do something, urgently write and share your concerns with your local state MP as they will be the ones deciding which way to vote on this bill in the coming days.
We understand that this topic is complex and can be a source of grief and distress for many reasons. If this is the case for you or a family member or friend, please do not hesitate to contact our pastoral team at Hillsong Church. God loves and cares for all people, and our Church is a place of acceptance, love and support for all.
