DAY 1: Spirit, Soul and Body

Jan 1 2021

You are extremely complicated! Before you get offended, let me explain…

God made you unique, with your own unique combination of talents, feelings, thoughts, attitudes, circumstances… and the list goes on and on. You are not like anyone else. You may have similar interests or abilities to others, but you have your own unique story. And while this is true, as human beings, God created us all the same, and we are all intricately made.

Genesis 2:7 says, “God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive—a living soul!” (MSG). Our physical bodies were formed from the dirt and we became a living soul. But it was the very breath of God that made mans’ spirit come alive – He didn’t do this for any other living creature.

So we were all created with three parts: a spirit, a soul and a body.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NASB)

Your physical body is your ‘house’ – the part of you that interacts with the physical world around you and houses your soul and spirit. Your soul is the inward part that responds to the outer world around you through your mind, your will and your emotions, which enable you to think, choose and feel. Your soul contains your personality. But beneath all of this is your spirit, which only fully comes alive when you surrender your life to Jesus Christ.

If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. – Romans 8:10 (AMP)

Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God’s Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis. Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything. – 1 Cor 2:14-15 (GNT)

Your spirit is the most important life force within you. Just as a radio tunes in to different channels, your spirit is a receiver that ‘tunes’ you in to God’s Spirit. It is through your spirit that God becomes real to you and where you connect with Him.

Proverbs 20:27 says, “The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s innermost being.” (NIV) You can hear God’s voice and connect with His Spirit through your human spirit. When you choose to live by your spirit, your soul and body will align with God’s Spirit and fulfill His purpose in your life.
