6 KEY LEADERSHIP POINTS FROM OUR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS MINISTRY
This weekend in Australia, all our youth and young adult leaders will be gathering for our first ever Young Leaders Lab event. Myself and Laura will be hosting the day alongside special guests Rich and Dawncheré Wilkerson. It’s going to be a day of leadership injection- where we invest into our leadership teams to raise and equip the next generation of leaders!
To catch a glimpse of what this day will be about, I wanted to share with you the six key things that we do as a youth and young adults ministry. Over the years, a lot of changes take place, however these six things remain at the core of who we are and what we do.
1. PERSONAL CONTACT WEEKLY
So much can happen in a week of a young person’s life! We believe in relationship, leading genuinely and being authentically- INTERESTED in the lives of those we have the honour to lead! It’s so important to stay up to date and to be aware of the weekly ins and outs of our people.
2. REMEMBER SPECIAL OCCASIONS
One of the best ways to show how much we care is to remember special occasions. This involves celebrating the special moments but also remembering significant anniversaries. There’s something powerful about remembering occasions that mean something to someone else. Whether it be a birthday or the first time a loved one won’t be around.
3. PRAY FOR EACH MEMBER OF YOUR SMALL GROUP
We are not a youth club! We are a youth MINISTRY- we believe in ministering to young people. If not, we’re no different to the local club down the road. We have something different, something powerful to share. Setting time aside each week to pray for the people we lead is so important!
4. MONTHLY MEMORABLE MOMENTS
I don’t remember many things growing up- what some said, some of the messages that were preached or lyrics to a song we sung way back… But I do remember how someone made me feel! The moments we shared, the laughs we had the adventure we embarked on! There is something powerful about moments, especially moments that last a life time! Within our church we always say “church is to be enjoyed, not endured”. I always encourage our leaders to make leading fun (Safe, but fun) ! Leadership is an adventure! And one of the best ways to do this is to be intentional with making at least one moment every month significantly memorable and fun.
5. ACKNOWLEDGE & ENCOURAGE SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Human nature tends to point out something wrong or critique something that needs improvement, but there is something beautiful about encouraging progress- especially the spiritual progress of young peoples lives.
6. MEET THE PARENTS/KEEP UP TO DATE
Within our youth ministry, an important part of leading teenagers is the relationship our leaders have with their parents. It’s the key to communication and keeping students involved. For young adults, we alternatively call this keeping up to date- knowing when university exams are, knowing when work deadlines are etc.
