Nadia was a sweet but care-worn grandmother who attended GROW in a local government clinic in Mitchell’s Plain. From the very start, she humbly and hungrily leant in – eager for wisdom and support in raising her little granddaughter, who came with her each week. In the first session, we spoke about some of the influences you can have on your unborn child through your behaviours during pregnancy. Nadia timidly asked whether we thought her granddaughter’s behavioural issues were associated with her mother’s substance abuse while pregnant with her. It was a heavy moment as she realised the damage that may have already been done in this little one’s life. One of our amazing volunteers started to respond to her though, and as she spoke about the incredible opportunities Nadia had to re-build and restore what was damaged, it was like a tangible sense of hope filled the room. It was a lifeline and a glimpse of a better future for a child whose beginning was less than it ought to have been. As the course went on, we continued to try to bring support and encouragement to the courageous mothers and grandmothers in the room. After one session, Nadia confided to one of our team that sometimes life feels like it’s too much to bear and not worth the struggle, but when she leaves the Grow sessions, she feels light and lifted up and ready to go on!

Caring for children is the most incredible and the most challenging responsibility. To place value on such a vital role is always worthwhile!
