Bermondsey Building Project and Warehouse Update
Everyone has a name, every name has a story and every story matters to God.
Since 2012 we have been in negotiations with a property developer with respect to a potential building project in South East London, and as part of this project we were also leasing the Bermondsey Warehouse in Stockholm Road.
Our Bermondsey warehouse location has been a Church Home to our South East London congregation for the last 8 years, and has also been our base for Hillsong UK Online Church services since the first lockdown in March 2020. From the moment we first moved into the warehouse we have seen thousands of salvations, and have witnessed the transformational work of Jesus through our congregation, with baptisms, testimonies of provision, healing in people’s lives, and relationships restored. As well as a Church Home, the warehouse has been a foundation for us to facilitate community work and building into the wider church in the UK. Because of the Warehouse, we have been able to house and operate our Staff Offices and Production Hub, along with our Amplified Arts Academy, Encounter Youth & Young Adult Conferences, Youth Nights, Greenlight Services, Care Leavers Christmas Dinners, Team and Leadership Days, Marriage, Parenting and Relationship Sessions, Sisterhood and Men’s Days. The Warehouse has also been our main rehearsal space for our King of Heaven and Carols Productions, as well as Hillsong Conference Europe and Colour.
The developers of the Bermondsey Project recently reissued their proposed agreement to us and based on the rising cost of the proposed project, the unknown project timescale and current economic circumstances, we have made the decision that it was in our best interest not to proceed with the project, but instead consider other options. Unfortunately, as a result of ending our participation in the building programme the lease on the Bermondsey warehouse, which was linked to this project, was not renewed. The warehouse premises have since been vacated in December 2020.
We are grateful to our Location Pastors Phil & Annie Kyei, along with our leadership team, volunteers and congregation who together have built a foundation for what God is going to do next through us as a church in South East London. As we know, church has never been about the building, but is all about the people; we may no longer have the warehouse, but we remain committed as ever to our congregation and the community of South East London. As we head into a New Year in 2021, we already have opportunities for potential new venues and we are as excited as ever for the future of church in this part of London.
The Bermondsey Warehouse has undoubtedly been a significant hub for Hillsong Church in the UK, and with so much achieved here in the last 8 years imagine what the future could look like.
Find Your People
As human beings, so much of our personal wellbeing has a direct link to our interaction with others. So, as a church, we regularly hang out together – and almost always around food! These meals take place in groups; most likely in people’s homes, cafes, restaurants or pubs. (We are currently only meeting online)
Groups are relational, personal and informal. They include having a meal together, praying for one another, and often include a discussion topic that is common to all our Groups.
