DAY 2: Living from your spirit

What does it mean to ‘live from your spirit’? Yesterday we looked at how we are a three part being: spirit, soul and body. With our body and our soul (mind, will and emotions) we can worship and cry out to God, but it is through our spirit that we commune with and receive Him. Think about that for a moment. When you communicate with God through your spirit you can hear Him; in fact, that is why you exist!

It is through your spirit that you perceive what is going on spiritually speaking – and if ever there was a time to know what’s going on spiritually, it’s now! As Christians, it is vital to live with an open spirit to God. You receive from God through your spirit, which is why your spirit is so important to Him.

John 3:6 says, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the [Holy] Spirit is spirit
[your spirit]”. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in your spirit.”

Living from your spirit stops the chaos that comes from living in the realm of your soul. Much of the content of your soul is learned behaviour from your upbringing and experiences. Unless the negative attitudes and wrong belief systems are corrected in line with God’s Word, they will dominate your thinking and sabotage your life. If you are controlled by your soul, you will be ruled by what others think and say. But when you live with your spirit connected to God’s, you can break free of the control of what other people think about you.

Ultimately, your spiritual life is led by God’s Spirit in your spirit. God will speak to you uniquely and personally. He won’t say the same things in the same way He does to anyone else.

O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. – Psalm 139:1-4 (NKJV)

You can trust God with your life. He knows you inside and out in a way no one else possibly can. When you open your spirit to His, He will guide you, and tell you the future. He will instruct you regarding the right choices for your life from the smallest to the greatest, leading you on a path to peace and fulfilment; a life that shines forth His glory.

It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s! – Romans 8:10-11 (MSG)
