At 78 why would a man decide it’s time to volunteer to reach out to his lonely neighbours?
Brian’s journey has been remarkable, starting over 10 years ago when we first knocked on his door. Back then Brian described himself as a chronic alcoholic and he would abuse and be sarcastic towards our teams that tried to reach out to him. However, to his surprise, Brian said, “his words were like water off a ducks back” and they kept returning every fortnight with a smile and to chat to him.
Even though he began attending church he still struggled with alcohol and knew that he would need a miracle to overcome his addiction. Thankfully his prayers were answered six months later and he has not touched a drop of alcohol since.
Earlier this year, Brian joined our Street teams as a volunteer. As a trusted and familiar face, his neighbours were both surprised and delighted to see Brian on Saturdays wearing his green Street Teams t-shirt and helping to serve his local community.
In our cities there are many lonely people who do not have a consistent social network of friends or family and may go for weeks without speaking to another human being. Loneliness is one of the greatest poverties of the first world and we all have a part to play in caring for those around us. Never underestimate the impact you can have on another’s life when you take time to listen and show genuine care for their wellbeing.
