About the Project
In the Northern Territory, where over 30% of the population identifies as Aboriginal, many women live and raise their families in remote communities. When it’s time to give birth, they often have to leave their homes and travel a great distance to one of the four regional hubs: Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, or Nhulunbuy.
These journeys can be challenging, and many women arrive at the hospital alone, with English as their second or even third language. They often come with little more than the clothes they’re wearing, lacking basic personal hygiene products and baby essentials, as these items are either unavailable or extremely expensive in community stores.
The midwives at Gove District Hospital (Nhulunbuy) identified this need and approached our church for help.
As a Sisterhood, we are deeply committed to supporting these women by providing them with a maternity bag filled with essential items, bringing a sense of comfort, value, and dignity during such a significant time in their lives. It’s a simple reminder that they have a Sisterhood that believes in them and in their babies’ future, by meeting an immediate practical need.
Each bag costs approximately $75 and is packed with post-birth care essentials, personal hygiene items, and important necessities for their baby.
