WORKING & WAITING

Dec 1 2020

As we approach a return to physical services the story of Mary & Martha comes to mind. There is so much preparation to do and such little time. It can be easy as leaders to struggle with the tension of focusing on what there is to do (WORK) and our time with Jesus (WAITING). It begs the question: which is more important?

The Bible blows my mind — it is the only book throughout history that is relevant at all times & especially today with real world application. Jesus covered this tension in Luke 10. Read with me:

“As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.”

The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”” — ‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:38-42‬ ‭MSG‬‬

There is so much we don’t know about this story. We don’t know how much Mary worked to prepare for Jesus before he arrived. I’d like to think Jesus PROTECTED Martha in that moment because HE KNEW exactly where she was at. Leaders — let’s have an eye for where people are at. The golden rule is this: if you don’t know.. you don’t know. Have a conversation. Invite the Holy Spirit in.

The bottom line is that BOTH Mary & Martha were serving JESUS — the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), King of all Kings and Lord of Lords. And my encouragement for you — do not wait for a NEW YEAR resolution to bring your servitude in a service as they return.. make a NEW DAY resolution to sit (wait) & serve (working out our faith). Get great people around you who can help you guard that boundary. Let’s not get so swept up in preparation or serving that we completely miss JESUS & what He is doing TODAY. We love you and cannot wait to see you! ??
