Sudan is experiencing a Humanitarian Emergency – the largest displacement crisis in the world.
The escalation of conflict in April 2023 in Sudan worsened an already fragile situation. Now, over a year later, the conflict has plunged millions into a severe crisis.
The need is overwhelming:
- Nearly 12 million people, including at least 5 million children, have been
displaced by conflict and violence and urgently need safety, food, shelter, and healthcare. - Nearly 9 million children in Sudan are facing acute food insecurity and over 700,000 children under 5 years of age are at the risk of dying.
- 19 million children are unable to access education, compromising the next generation’s future.
World Vision’s Response
World Vision is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in Sudan, having worked in the country for decades. Currently, they are supporting the immediate needs of families across both Sudan and in surrounding countries.
World Vision is the World Food Programme’s largest distribution partner and a preferred partner of the USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. World Vision’s deep relationships, as well as partnerships at country and local levels, enable World Vision to reach remote locations and serve people in greatest need.
World Vision’s responds by providing:
- Food and nutrition programs to prevent and treat malnutrition and keep families from going hungry
- Health services and supplies to prevent and treat diseases like malaria, measles, diarrhea, antenatal and post-natal care
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities to ensure access to clean water and prevent the spread of infections
- Shelter to offer safety and dignity to those living in camps or host communities
- Safe spaces and psychosocial support to help children cope with trauma and resume learning.
World Vision’s Heart
Motivated by their faith in Jesus and empowered by their worldwide partnerships and presence in nearly 100 countries, World Vision is uniquely positioned to respond to humanitarian emergencies anywhere in the world — including the crisis in Sudan.
Access to many areas of the country is extremely challenging, but World Vision continues to have a strong presence in Sudan, reaching over 1.2 million people in the last year with emergency assistance. Our track record is one of success. By the grace of God, over the last 10 years, 89% of the severely malnourished children we treated made a full recovery.
“Our vision is for every child, life in all its fullness. Our prayer, for every heart, the will to make it so.”
You could help support children like Rachida
Eight year old Rachida (pictured below) lost her entire family— her father, mother, and three brothers—shot to death by gunfire in Sudan. Rachida’s aunts took her on their backs, to Chad, where they made a small structure from sticks and clothes, which was later destroyed by the rain. Thankfully, they were soon able to move into a shelter in a World Vision supported camp, where they will remain until it is safe to return home.
