Working with unaccompanied minors

in Croydon, Redhill and Brighton

We have an amazing opportunity to work with Pathways to Independence, an organisation which houses unaccompanied minors from 16-18 years in and around Croydon, Redhill, and Brighton.

SHINE PROGRAMME
Pathways to Indepence currently have 9 girls (aged 16-18yrs) living in a shelter in Brighton. We have the opportunity to run the ShineGirl programme with them. Venue, date and times are to be confirmed but we would love to know of any women who would be able to commit to running Shine on a weekly basis and travel down to Brighton. We also need Tigrinya, Amharic and Kurdish translators (female) to help with this programme.
–> Contact us if you want to get involved:[email protected]

YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB
We are going to start a weekly football club with the unaccompanied minors in Croydon and our youth groups. Our goal is to connect with these young people around the universal game of football! This will help to develop relationships & build confidence with young people their own age who live locally, helping them to be a part of their community. A 5 or 7-a-side pitch will be rented to make sure we have a bi-weekly place to go to.

DIY PROJECTS
The unaccompanied minors in Croydon live in independent housing in 4 different locations with 5 youth in each house, along with a house in Redhill that houses 5 boys. We have the opportunity to refurbish/kit-out these houses by doing DIY, painting, cleaning and bringing in some new items. We need painters, decorators, interior designers or really anyone who is gifted in make a house a home!

Community Sponsorship Programme

Helping Syrian families settle into the UK

We want to help refugees coming in to the UK feel welcome and help them set up for life in our city and nation. As a church we are signing up for the Community Sponsorship Programme with the Home Office, which means that we have the opportunity to support Syrian refugee families with their resettlement in the UK for the first two years they are here.

One of the main requirements for this programme is facilitating adequate living space for these families. If you are a property owner or landlord and have living areas available for the next two years that you would like to offer against Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates please get in touch via our email [email protected].

Hosting a refugee

Providing temporary accommodation for homeless migrants and refugees

We have a great opportunity to partner with Housing Justice to provide support to refugees or migrants by hosting them for a few days or a few months.

If you have a spare room and live within the M25, this can be a vital place of support, safety and security until the case of the refugee has been progressed or resolved. We are not offering professional support, simply a place to stay, facilities to wash and somewhere to cook and eat. These and your offer of friendship will go a long way.

The processes include a thorough risk assessments to ensure the safety of both hosts and refugee guests, this is vetted by the Housing Justice. You meet your guest beforehand, get relevant training and support from the Housing Justice and you will have a chance to meet other hosts.

Please visit Housing Justice website for more information or send an email to [email protected] to register your interest or find out more.

English Classes

To help those within our communities help integrate better our Greenlight team has started English Classes and are working towards a team of skilled people that can help teach and host these classes on a regular basis.

For more information on how to get involved in English Classes see our volunteering page.

Fostering

Hundreds of refugee children have come to the UK unaccompanied by parents. We are working with local authorities on how we can support those who are considering fostering a child. Our aim as a church is to create a network within our church that supports those in the process of fostering a child.

If you have always had a heart to foster children, we would love to help & assist you in this process – for more information on fostering see hillsong.co.uk/foster
